William Larue Weller is the barrel-proof, uncut and unfiltered crown of the wheated bourbon world — the wheated entry in Buffalo Trace's annual Antique Collection. Distilled at Buffalo Trace from the historic wheated mash bill (corn, soft red winter wheat, malted barley — no rye), aged roughly twelve years in select rickhouses, and bottled straight from the barrel with nothing added and nothing taken away. The 2023 release lands at a massive 133.6 proof (66.8% ABV), pouring deep mahogany and packing dense layers of dark caramel, cherry preserves, leather, vanilla bean, baking spice and a long oak-driven finish. Named after the 19th-century Louisville distiller credited with first substituting wheat for rye as the secondary grain — the same recipe that later built the Pappy Van Winkle legend.

Nose
Dark caramel, cherry preserves, vanilla bean, leather, toasted oak and a whisper of pipe tobacco. Massive but never hot.
Palate
Rich brown sugar, stewed dark fruit, baked cherry, dark chocolate, honeyed wheat, cinnamon-clove baking spice and candied pecan — full-bodied and viscous despite the high proof.
Finish
Long, warming and oak-forward. Toffee, dried cherry, soft leather and a clean wheated sweetness that lingers for minutes.

Serving Suggestion
Neat in a Glencairn at room temperature. A few drops of spring water open the nose and tame the heat without dulling the depth. Not built for cocktails — this is a sipping pour.
Food Pairings
Dark-chocolate truffles, aged Gouda, pecan pie, cherry cobbler, smoked brisket, glazed pork belly and roasted nuts.
